What is Good Health?

It's that time of year when people's attention turns to New Year's resolutions, often around health. I love this passage sent by a friend after my husband Wes's passing because it expands our notion of what it means to be healthy, even in the midst of illness.

"The nature of Wes's passing shows us the possibility of different points of view that we can have about things, for although Wes may have had coronary health issues, I never knew a man with a better heart. He is a reminder to all of us that true health need not be equated with the absence of pathology, but rather can be viewed as the presence of something so much more precious—a good spirit filled with love and compassion. In this way we can be healthy even in the midst of sickness; we can flourish even in the face of our own mortality. Wes will always remind me of this."

Helping Others Through Grief & Illness

The holidays can be especially challenging for people who are missing loved ones or dealing with illness. My books can help you help them! I received some wonderful feedback from judges of the 31st Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards.

"Outstanding guidance for the sometimes-dicey protocols of offering assistance to those who are ill or grieving. I appreciated how concise each tip is, and the cartoons are a delightful companion that build an empathetic bond with readers. With these books, the reader gains confidence to be a better helper."

"The author writes with a terrific light-hearted voice, offering smart and sensitive options and responses. I liked the author's use of humor, which can be very risky if the loved one is in pain. Author walks a good line of advice, welcoming the reader, and offering assurance right away and throughout."

Wes was a bodyworker. After he passed I found a handwritten note in which he offered these tips in support of good health:
  • Hold love spirit in the bones—dissolves fear
  • Massage feet and abdominal organs
  • Wag tail
